Relocating to Illinois – Coming Home

If you are Relocating to Illinois, you've already got a friend.

If you are relocating to Illinois you may not be coming here to work, you may be coming home. Whether it's because you love the area, have family here or just feel you were more happy when living here, we often help families like you who are relocating to Illinois. Coming home is a beautiful experience. Even if Illinois was not your birth place, if you consider it home, then it's where your heart is.

relocating to illinois and leaving the palm trees behindWhen our family moved to Florida back in 2003 we thought it was a permanent move, how wrong we were, after 9 months we hit the road and were relocating to Illinois, the place we set out from not so long ago. There were things about Florida we liked and things we didn't. In the end we felt Illinois was our home even though we were born and raised in England. When we told people we were relocating to Illinois, we were met with some very confused looking faces!

We drove up from the south and crossed the border into Illinois, with snow on the ground and getting colder as the miles passed, I was one very happy person. My smile was palpable. When we made it back to Barrington, I was home. Florida can always be a vacation destination and we made some friends but the home pull was very strong.

Relocating to Illinois - You're Not Alone

If you are set to come home, you're not alone. Just because you have no employer to help with your relocation to Illinois doesn't mean it's going to be a tough road to travel. We are here to help. In fact when we moved to Florida and then back we had no assistance whatsoever from the company my husband worked for. He had the option of working in either state and it was our decision to move so we achieved it all by ourselves and paid for the entire process there and back. You can do it too, but having someone with the same experience as you will be a valuable tool.

Whether you are relocating to Illinois for family, friends, work or just because, we are here to help with your real estate needs. We are here to help and support you through the upheaval. We are here to share stories when you have arrived. Call us if you're relocating to Illinois, we serve the northwest suburbs of Chicago and Barrington and Inverness areas. You can start your home search using with our search tool.

Moving to Illinois - The Inevitable Bedroom Argument Kids Have

While you are moving to Illinois and want to find a great community to live in, and that perfect house to call your own; kids have a different agenda - bedrooms. They will have different things on their minds. Leaving school, saying goodbye to best friends, wandering if they'll like the new school, making new friends and BEDROOMS.

I am not sure why this is, perhaps is just because they are looking for a level of comfort and a bedroom provides that. Maybe they just want to have the best this time around. Either way if you take the kids house hunting they may start picking the bedroom they want before you've even picked the house. Kids are clever. They will zone into your emotions and will know if the house you are standing in stands a chance of being selected. Family moving into new home smilingIf you've got one child, no issues right.

If you've got two or more and they are going to get a room each, how is it they always want the same one? Is it size, location, color or the toys they see in the room that match their own. Does the eldest child get the biggest bedroom? No matter what you do, there may be happiness for one, jealousy or disappointment for another, and downright rage and stomping from another. Like you need all this drama while trying to choose the house!

So what to do? Well you could make the rules before you go looking. Oldest child will have the biggest room, room by age  rank so to speak. Youngest child or baby will have the room closest to parents regardless of size. Or you can fight the fires as you go, once the house is chosen. Agree smallest room gets decorated first-now see who will accept the little room-they'll likely all jump on that.

As an Air Force kid I remember the bedroom issues. My brother and I took turns getting the biggest room, the other got the smallest. My two other brothers had no choice, middle bedroom and share it!

While this may not be top of your mind for your upcoming move to Illinois, have your "bedroom" defense plan ready!

Relocation to Florida and Back to Illinois – My National Mistake

There's no mistaking this, I have been a "relo kid" since an early age. Actually I was an "Air Force brat" until about age 15. My Dad was in the Royal Air Force, you know the British one, and so from age 1 day moving around was a way of life. As young kids we don't really question it, most likely because we only live for today.

At age 4 we moved to Singapore for 2 and a half years, and I remember alot about that time, but nothing before then. Then back to the UK and we lived in many different counties until Dad took early retirement and we settled in Hamsphire. Who would have known that in my future lay not only a relocation to the Chicago area, but a return to the UK, then back again, then off we went to Florida and yes you got it, back again.

Boy in my lifetime I have traveled a lot of miles.

We were pros at relocating, kids, pets even a web based business came with us to Florida. Our belongings hit the road a day behind us and arrived a couple of days after us. We closed the sale of our Deer Park-Barrington home while we were on the road. Our attorney was great, she handled it all so we could get a head start. We arrived in Florida, the listing agent for the house we were buying let the kids into the house with pets so we could stop dragging them around. Hubby and I went to closing and on the day we arrived in Florida we were new home owners. Did I tell you how organized I am? Please bear in mind I did all this without the support of a Realtor in Illinois, but we had one in Florida, although his help really was limited to just the house purchase. Float and vacuum in pool.

So what's up Corinne? Well new house and no furniture brings similar issues as the international relocation. Nothing to eat with, nothing to sit on and nothing to sleep in. I guess we could have done the hotel thing but with dogs and cats and the expense of relocating to Florida we chose to tough it out. We had a swimming pool at the house so that took care of entertainment and we bought a new patio set, Florida style and a new set of plates, dishes, knives and forks. All in all much cheaper than a boring hotel for 2 nights. We bought 4 sleeping bags knowing they would always come in handy and yes they have.

All sounds just fine, so what was the mistake? Funny you should ask! The mistake was moving to Florida. When I look back I have to wonder where my head was. It wasn't like I was not giving it the right consideration, I thought I was. I simply did not settle in Florida. I am not a lover of humidity and though I know you get used to that, I missed a lot of things here in Illinois. The infrastructure for one, the weather seasons for another, including the winter which is my favorite season. I really sense that Barrington Illinois is my home and after the strangest Christmas in Florida we put the house up for sale, just 6 months after buying it and by February we were back here in Illinois. This time we did stay at the hotel for 5 days until we closed our house purchase.

I did leave one thing behind in Florida. My web based business I sold to a gal in Jupiter which was just down the road from us in Palm Beach Gardens, and we stay in contact via Facebook, she still has it 7 years later and is doing very well.

What about the kids Corinne? Actually although they did not complain about moving to Florida, they made a lot of friends very quickly, I know my eldest son was glad to get back with his crowd. The youngest just takes everything in his stride. Oh to be young again!

International Relocating to Chicago Illinois and Living Without Your Stuff

When my husband first told me we could relocate to Chicago Illinois in the USA it sounded intriguing but I was not sure. Move ahead a few weeks and we had decided that relocating to Chicago Illinois was on the calendar. The funny thing was we weren't actually relocating to Chicago, that's just the place I knew how to find on a map. My husband was going to be working for Motorola in Schaumburg. Were we relocating to Schaumburg? Read on you'll find out.

container ship with our belongings 6 weeks behind our relocation to chicago illinoisShortly after Christmas in the UK, all our belongings were packed into a container, we were packed into two limos and headed to the airport, complete with suitcases full of clothes and our Irish Setter and two cats. That's all there was, the rest was headed for the Atlantic Ocean. The relocation to Chicago had started!

That doesn't sound too bad until you realize with two young kids and nowhere to live, you're essentially homeless, so how to cope. Well the first thing we had to do was find a home to rent. We were lucky as Motorola provided both our accommodation cost, or at least a monthly contribution, and an agent to help us find a house. For the short term they found a corporate rental condo for us in Schaumburg. We settled on a home in Arlington Heights, having searched many of the cities around Schaumburg. We ended up just over budget and our personal cost was $50 a month, the housing situation was taken care of.

Empty house! We did have to rent beds and basic furniture until ours arrived but that was not really a big deal. In Chicagoland there are a number of furniture rental stores to choose what you need in the short term.

But Mom, what can we do! The pets were taken care of, after all they just need love, food, somewhere to sleep and some outside exercise for the dog, not difficult, especially as they'll sleep anywhere. The kids, well that's another matter. At age 4 and 6 the TV, newly bought because the electric supply is different here, can only last so long. Kids need toys and they were floating on a container ship. So we had to go shopping.

If you know the expression "kids in a candy store" you can just imagine what it was like. Christmas all over again! The toys too, all different, what to pick? They finally settled within the budget we allowed and all was calm again until our belongings arrived, 6 weeks later. Our relocation to Chicago Illinois, was pretty smooth and uneventful, but I am an organized person and take most things in my stride.

How did we cope when we relocated to Florida? National relocation has different challenges especially as now we are Green Card holders and not moving across the pond. You can read about that in my next post. For now if a relocation to Chicago Illinois or the suburbs is in your near future, our relocation website is provided to help you. You can find homes to buy or homes to rent.

Can I Live In Barrington Without A Car?

Can I Live In Barrington Without A Car?

small shops in barringtonFor an English girl that when living at home used to walk everywhere, this might seem an odd question. But once I moved to the US it was apparent that walking everywhere was really not possible, even just to a few places would present hurdles.

So can I live in Barrington without a car? Well the answer is it depends where in Barrington I live and what I might need that Barringtn does not have.

Where in Barrington should I live so I can walk everywhere?

Barrington is a big place and I am referring to the entire zip code of 60010, but to be close to things I need that I can walk to, my best bet is the Village of Barrington and close to the center. How does this help me? Here are the things I can walk to if I live close to the center of the village:

  • The Library
  • The Pharmacy
  • The Catlow Theater
  • Jewel Osco - a large chain grocery store
  • Small stores
  • The Post Office
  • UPS store
  • Lots of restaurants.
  • The Metra train station
  • Elementary Schools
  • One Middle school-the other is too far out.
  • The High School-on the outskirts but if I live on the west side it's not too far.
  • Churches
  • Doctors and dentist offices
  • Attorneys
  • Parks

So I can sleep, eat, get better, ship gifts and letters, dine, send my kids to school, worship, in fact I can do many of the day to day things. I can even get on a train and visit friends in different towns like Palatine, Cary, Arlington Heights and go downtown to Chicago where walking to everything is easier.

What can't I do because I can only walk?

  • I cannot buy a lot of groceries at a time, I have to carry them home. I could use Peapod!
  • There is no regular bus service, although there is a senior citizen bus service.
  • I cannot go to buy big items, so online with delivery charges resolves that.
  • Get to the hospitals to visit friends or family as needed.
  • Get to work unless it's close to Metra. Chicago seems fine.
I am sure there are more things I have not thought of but it seems that living in Barrington without a car is a good possibility but only in the village. You can ask me a question if you are thinking of living in Barrington without a car, I am happy to get the answer for you.

Illinois Real Estate Brokers-How To Find The Right One

Illinois Real Estate Brokers-How To Find The Right One

If you are looking for Illinois Real Estate Brokers you'll likely be an out of town buyer coming to Illinois in the near future; or you're an Illinois seller trying to find an Illinois Real Estate Broker to help you with the sale of your Illinois Property.

So how do you identify the right Illinois Real Estate Brokers to interview and hire? Perhaps the first thing to consider is the Illinois is a state not a small city or town and so there are thousands to choose from. I sometimes laugh to myself because Illinois my home state is bigger than England my country of birth. If I wanted to buy a house in Southern England I certainly would not select a broker from up north as we say.

Once you have gone regional, drill down to town or even subdivision level to find the right expertise. Now it's time to focus on the Illinois Real Estate Brokers area of expertise and I don't mean geographical. With hundreds of brokers working in the cities and towns you live in or want to live in you should look for the expert that matches your needs. Examples are:

  • Buyingillinois real estate brokers-licensed by the state of illinois
  • Selling
  • Condos
  • First Time Buyers
  • First Time Sellers
  • Relocation
  • Seniors-Empty Nest Sellers
  • Luxury Home Buyers
  • Luxury Home Sellers
  • Property Management
  • Commercial Brokers
  • Equestrian Property
  • New Construction
  • Short Sales
  • Town Homes
  • Retirees
  • Women
  • Medical Professionals
  • Engineers

Most Brokers will specialize in one or two areas.

Here's your quick think list to find yourself an Illinois Real Estate Broker

  1. First Go Local - Find a broker that works in your area.
  2. Locate a Buyers Agent or Sellers Agent
  3. Find your Niche Expert
  4. Interview Your Chosen Illinois Real Estate Brokers. Three to Five if possible.
  5. Ask The Questions You Want Answers To
  6. Ask what the agent will do for you-experts will have no problem answering this-generalists may fumble the answer.
  7. Short List The Brokers that gave You The Answers You Wanted
  8. Short List The Illinois Real Estate Brokers that focused on you, not on how much business they do
  9. Select your Broker and Sign an agreement-this makes your Broker accountable to your needs whether you are buying or selling.

It's not difficult to find some-one who cares about you and your real estate goals, this will clearly become apparent when you interview your short list. It's like going on a date, you'll just 'get' the connection. The Internet is a great research tool. Looking for houses? Find a Buyers Broker's site that has all the listings not just their own. Looking for a Listing Broker? Read on site testimonials.

listing agents and buyers agents to find or sell Illinois homesNow this will take you time and sometimes you'll not be able to find anyone. In Northern Illinois and the larger cities it will be easier than in Southern Illinois. So let me extend this offer to you. If having read my areas of expertise you realize I am not the right Illinois Real Estate Broker for you, let me help you find the one that is. I have hundreds of connections in the Chicago City and Suburbs area and I also know Illinois Real Estate Brokers throughout the state. I have previously found great Brokers for clients in Swansea and Peoria Illinois.

I am an Illinois Real Estate Broker working in the Barrington, Palatine and Lake Zurich areas. I will travel to other surrounding suburbs with buyers as sometimes you'll need to expand your search. Cary, Algonquin, Lake in The Hills, Crystal Lake, Wauconda, Island Lake, Kildeer, Deer Park, Long Grove, Hawthorn Woods, Vernon Hills, Mundelein, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights are all cities I have sold or shown homes in.

I focus as a Buyers Agent and will helps buyers with short sales and foreclosures. Occasionally I will list property for sale. My preferred buyer clients are those relocating to my area because my back ground gives me the personal perspective to help you. Please read my testimonials.

Barrington Realtors-Are You Looking For A Specialist Realtor or Will a General Barrington Realtor Do?

Barrington Realtors-Are You Looking For A Specialist Realtor or Will a General Barrington Realtor Do?

If you are looking for Barrington Realtors then I guess you'll be wanting to buy or sell a home in Barrington at some time in the near future. There is no doubt that there are plenty of Barrington Illinois Realtors for you to choose from but how do you choose?

barrington realtors-are you looking for a specialist realtor or will a general barrington realtor do?General Barrington Realtors

Past Barrington Realtors
- A Good place to start if you have bought or sold a home in Barrington IL or the surroundng areas in the past and are still local. Search for your Barrington Realtor by name online, chances are if they are still in real estate you'll find them.

Friends, Family, Referrals - If you know some-one that had a good experience then this can be a good place to find your Barrington Realtor. I do suggest that you interview the Realtor and perhaps a few others to be sure it will be a good fit for you. Are you looking for an introvert or extrovert Realtor, a buyers or sellers agent, or any number of other things important to you?

Search online for Barrington Realtors - Pick based on brand name, company, location, online resume, sales volume, interview a few, or pick the first one you find.

Specialist Barrington Realtors

A Specialist Barrington Realtor
- Whether you are buying or selling your unique circumstances and needs will not fit all Barrington Realtors. Find a Barrington Realtor that specilaizes in your circumstances. Generally speaking and perhaps that is not the best word to use here but it works well; specialist's have more indepth knowledge and experience about the niches they have chosen to work in. Here are some ideas for you to consider.

  • Short Sales - Not all Barrington Realtors have experience, they may have a designation but never actually sold a short sale home or helped a buyer with a short sale purchase.
  • Foreclosures - Again they may have a designation but never helped a buyer purchase a bank owned home.
  • Ist Time Buyers - Not a big market for Barrington Illinois but first time buyers need a little more hand holding.
  • Relocation - Whether leaving or arriving a Barrington Realtor with knowledge and even personal experience would serve you well.
  • Luxury Home Sellers - A Listing agent that has connections to advertise your home on the luxury real estate internet sites will bring in buyers from around the country and world.  What other marketing is best for your home?
  • Vacant Home Sales - Who is going to look after your home. Perhaps you had to leave to start a new job thousands of miles away. Does it need staging?
  • Equestrian Property - Need acreage for your horses? Arenas, barns, stables, fencing etc.
  • Expired Listings - Did not sell your home first time around? Find a Barrington Realtor that specializes in these!

As you see there are many different types of transactions and you can add many different types of property. So would you rather pick a specialist Barrington Realtor or from all the General Barrington Realtors. That's a decision for you to make but in the meantime here are my chosen specialties:

  • Short Sales - I have closed many short sales and also have my Short Sale & Foreclosure Designation -SFR .
  • Barrington Home Buyers - I love working with buyers at all price levels. I am not a Barrington Realtor that "sells"  you a home. I help you identify your dream home making sure you have all the information you need to make an educated decision. I promise to point out an issues that might affect re-sale. I promise not to utter these words. "Well this is a nice home, shall we write a contract?"
  • Relocation Clients - Having relocated both nationally and internationally all my life you'll have a Realtor that has been in your shoes many times over.
    • Buyers-we'll identify the right area for you first and then we'll find your new home.
    • Sellers-As I also specialize in selling vacant property you'll benefit from a Barrington Realtor that will take care of your home once you leave.
  • Selling Vacant Homes - No matter what the reason is once I have outlined my vacant home sales 'Care and Marketing Plan', I hope you'll see how I go the extra mile to make your home presentable every day for buyers to view, and give you peace of mind if you are thousands of miles away.

I hope you'll see that hiring a specialist Barrington Realtor will be in your bests interests. You might also ask any Barrington Realtors you are considering if they work at the job full time or part time. This may matter to you and your circumstanes or it may not, again only you can decide. Give me a call if you need a specialist. If I am not it, I can certainly find some-one that is!

Buyers Agents Barrington Illinois - Consider Hiring a Buyer Specialist Realtor or Broker when Buying Barrington IL Real Estate

Buyers Agents Barrington Illinois - Consider Hiring a Buyer Specialist Realtor or Broker when Buying Barrington IL Real Estate

Is a Barrington Buyer Specialist Agent Better for You when buying a new home in Barrington Illinois?

barrington realtors

Are you in the market to buy a home this comming year in the Barrington Illinois area? Perhaps you will be relocating from another state and have identified Barrington IL as your target market. Maybe you've had enough of busy Chicago city life and want to come out to the green countryside style of the Barrington area. Are the schools bringing you here? Whatever the reason consider hiring a buyer agent specialist to be your Realtor.

Any agent can represent you as a buyer but many of them have listing homes as their primary and preferred function. Is a Buyer Agent Specialist a better option for you? How do you pick the right Barrington Realtor? Here are some things to consider.

  • Is your agent a Realtor? A Realtor is a member of the National Association of Realtors and abides by their Code of Ethics.
    • I am a member of National Association of Realtors as well as the Illinois Association of Realtors.
  • Find a Buyers Agent that works full time.  An agent that has another job or does not work weekends is not going to provide the best service to you. Did the agent you called answer the phone or get back to you promptly?
    • As your Barrington Buyers Agent real estate is my only career. I do not have another job and I am a 7 days a week agent. When you need me - I will be there.
    • My cell phone is publised here and in many areas. You can call or text me. I answer the phone myself or return alls the same day.

  • Your Buyers Agent should know the Barrington area well.  An out of town Realtor that says they work here may know nothing about Barrington.
